It’s Family Picture Time Again

My friend Brandi Davidson took this amazing photo! I can't believe how good she is, we literally got our best pictures with MAYBE 10 minutes total of snapping photos (not including our 1 location change). Check out her website. http://www.brandilyndavidsonphotography.com

More fun pictures

Benjamin and Jeffrey get out in the garden with their new little shovel and hoe. They're helping Mommy dig a spot for planting onion bulbs.
Heave ho boys. Put your backs into it!

Mommy shows off her new short hair cut.

Benjamin and Jeffrey love wearing their mommy and daddy's hats for snack time.

Pirate Party I

Last night we babysat for our medical school friends, Stuart Winkler and Erin Loggins (soon to be Winkler; congrats!). Their son Noah is 5 years old and Ben and Jeffrey had a GREAT time following him around the house. They were all dressed in pirate garb, complete with swords, hats and eye patches. Then Shelly got the idea for me to draw them a treasure map. They were so excited to follow the map that she printed out little pictures of things from the map like "The Palm Tree Forest", "The Scary Cave", "Dead Man's Cove", "The Sunken Ship", and "Buried Treasure" with X marking the spot. We scattered them all over the house and the boys followed the map on their pirate adventure, finishing up at the bottom of the stairs that lead into our basement where the treausre was "buried". They had so much fun, they did it over and over again. Even today, Ben is still tracing his steps to find the treasure with Jeffrey bringing up the lead. Here are some photos from their swashbuckling journey. I'll give you one guess what these boys will be going as for Halloween this year...

A Pirate Party II

See above for description...

Ahoy, maties! First mate Jeffrey leads the way with Captains Noah and Benjamin behind.
The daring pirate duos have discovered the hidden treasure at the bottom of the stairs. Arggh!

Let's count the booty!

The super-secret treasure map they followed.

Megan is not one to miss out on the action. She is armed and dangerous.

Pumpkin Video

video

Enjoy this video montage of our family's pumpkin carving adventure.

Mommy gets a haircut

BEFORE
I took this picture of Shelly this morning before going to get her hair cut. Of course she looks absolutely beautiful.
AFTER
Wow, what a change! She looks great, doesn't she? What a knock out

A view from the back as well.
Today we had a fun day at home as a family. It's the beginning of my one and only week off this year, so we're taking time to enjoy it before I start the new rotation in OB/GYN. I'm really looking forward to that. This coming Saturday, Shelly and I are going to drive down to the temple in Columbia, South Carolina and do work their for some of my deceased ancestors. We have been talking to the kids about the temple and the importance of going there. Shelly gave an excellent talk in church this Sunday on that subject. I couldn't go because someone had to be home with Jeffrey (earlier in the week I diagnosed him with Hand Foot and Mouth; a mild viral illness but still not something you want other parents in the nursery freaking out about) but I heard her talk was great. Then she came home and traded places with me so I could go teach the lesson in Elders Quorum.
Anyways, today I got up early with Ben and got him off to school on the school bus, then seemed to have boundless energy even though I'd been up late reading a gripping Joel Rosenberg book. So I cleaned up in the kitchen, went on a run, and lifted some weights in the missionaries' apartment downstairs. Elder Jensen is still with us and was joined by a different Elder Thomas who was able to figure out how to set up the cables and pulleys for the weight set, so now we have that going. They love living here, and I don't blame them. Hopefully, I can make it a habit to go down and work out with them. Look out, Mr Universe... I'm gunning for ya'.
Later this morning, Shelly gave me another hair cut. She's getting really good at it; I don't think I'll ever spend another dime at the barber. Then we all went out as a family to run some errands and let Shelly get her hair cut too. Then we bought pumpkins from a pumpkin patch for us to carve with the missionaries. We got them two huge pumpkins so they could put them over their heads and pose on Sleepy Hollow Rd. We'll post that picture when we have it.
We got some great pictures and video of the pumpkin hunting today, so I put together a little video above. Hope you enjoy it.
Well, once again I have succeeded in staying up inordinately late. But oh well, what are fall breaks for? I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I was actually rested and refreshed in the morning.
I'll close this manic episode by wishing you all the best. Know that we love you and mention you in our prayers at night, hoping to see you again in the near future.
Sincerely,
Brian

A change in the weather

Ben is bundled up for the weather. It's COLD outside; about 40 degrees. But that won't stop him from riding his bike.

It also won't stop Jeffrey from going out on the porch butt naked!

Daddy consoles Megan about her pretty hat and nice warm winter clothes that she didn't want to put on.

Older pictures

Ben and Jeffrey display their toys that they got at the dollar store: a play cell phone and a bouncy ball.

Ben sips on root beer that he conned someone into giving him while Jeffrey looks ready for adventure.

Speaking of Jeffrey's adventures.... Yes, that's Jeffrey. Naked in our kitchen, standing on a chair, running the water in the sink, while wearing pink wrap-around sunglasses. Only he could pull something like this off.

Megan and Ben taking a bath.

The fabulous sock puppets that we made with the missionaries. I made three of these sock puppets and Shelly made one. Which one do you think it was?

"Skyping" with Grandpa Nyberg

This family portrait was captured by Dad while we were talking to him and Auntie Mathilde on the webcam. Jeffrey and Megan were a little distracted though...

Megan is having one of those hair days as I push the laptop across the floor and she crawls after it.

Daddy and Ben say hi to Grandpa Nyberg.

A day at the park

Megan looks so much like Ben at that age in this picture.

It was a sunny, windy day and someone was flying a kite. The boys loved watching it!

Ben and Jeffrey actually got to fly the kite too. They were very happy chappies. Ben thought it was funny to let go of the string and watch me go sprinting after it.

My beautiful baby girl.

A note from Brian with pictures

Hi family and friends, hope you are all doing well. I'm uploading some pictures that I've taken with my Blackberry recently. Not as good quality, but it's better than nothing!

Life is a bit hectic these days, but we are taking it in stride. I have done my Internal Medicine rotation and have nearly finished my Family Medicine rotation at the hospital in Kingsport (45 minute drive away). Being there by 6 am each morning and working long days in the ICU or ER has been stressful at times, but also a thrill to finally be taking care of patients and making a positive impact in their care. One of my favorite parts about being a medical student is having fewer patients to care for than the residents and therefore more time to spend with each of them really listening to their problems and picking up on important details that might have otherwise been missed. I have gotten great evaluations from the residents and attending with whom I work. One nice thing about being up at the hospital is that they give us a meal card with $20 on it each day. I've been eating breakfast, lunch, and often dinner there with some to spare, so I've been bringing home pints of whole milk from the cafeteria for Megan to drink.
Yes, Megan is on whole milk now and eats table foods ravenously. She is extremely mobile; never more than a few crawls behind her brothers when they are going pee pee in the potty. This makes for some challenging situations when Shelly or I (okay, mostly Shelly) are home alone with them since there are three children and, last time I checked, we only have two arms. I won't gross you out with some of the stories; if you really want to know, ask Shelly. She loves to tell everyone what Meg has put in her mouth lately.
Jeffrey and Ben are both doing well, though they have their good days and their, er... not so good days with potty training (see previous paragraph). Ben got his first real bike with training wheels and he has been learning to pedal it up and down the driveway and then up and down the neighborhood streets when I'm with him. At first he was afraid to speed down the hills, but now he doesn't mind. Sometimes I'll bring the skateboard that one of the missionaries gave to us and coast down the hill next to him. It's actually pretty fun; I can see why people enjoy snowboarding. Maybe someday I'll give it a try.
This weekend I'm on call and we will be watching the church broadcast of General Conference (Saturday and Sunday from 10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm if you'd like to tune in with us). Next week Shelly's going to be on her own for three full days while I am gone on a health fair in rural southwest Virginia, so please keep her in your prayers!
Now for pictures. Before I post anything else, I want to share this little video I took tonight of the boys. They were playing around with two empty red plastic bins that we use for storing toys. They would hide beneath them and then suddenly pop out and suprise me. They reminded me of little turtles or hermit crabs. Too funny; watch and see.

Bye for now.

Much love, Brian

Missionaries and Sock Puppets!

Today was Elder Jensen's birthday so we threw him a party with cake, ice-cream, and of course....sock puppets!!!! We had so much fun! Thanks to the elders for letting us borrow their cameras for some much-needed new photos!

From left to right: Elder Jensen, Elder Robite, and Elder Thomas with Shelly in front. Each of them is proudly displaying the sock puppet they made for the birthday party/family home evening activity.

Grrr, baby! Shelly poses for the camera while Elder Thomas' face gets blacked out by Brian's poor camera skills (in all fairness, he was trying to hold Megan, too!)

Elder Thomas' rendition of Hulk Hogan, the sock puppet wrestling champion.

Elder Robite's puppet has a lazy eye.

Elder Jensen's sock puppet is full of tricks.

No, he isn't at all excited to have a home-baked chocholate birthday cake on his mission.

The elders pose with Brian holding Megan and Benjamin at bottom left. Note their cute sock puppets too.

Elder Jensen and his magician sock puppet are two of a kind.

Still no pictures.

Okay, so we have no idea where our camera is, it just upped and disappeared one day. We keep thinking everytime we do a deep clean/organization of our house that we'll find it, but no such luck and it's been months. Brian has a few blurry pictures on his blackberry of the kids, but he hasn't uploaded them yet. So what has been new with us?

Well, Ben started pre-school again after a much too long summer break. He's had some trouble waking up in the morning and has decided that he has the "option" to say no to everything we ask him to do. Just putting him in time out wasn't working anymore because he either wouldn't stay in it, or he'd prefer to stay in time out instead of doing what he was asked to do. Now we put Thomas the train in time out if he does something wrong, so far it's working pretty well. :) He can get him back if he does something good like going pee pee in the potty or picking up his toys.

Jeffrey has decided that he no longer needs a diaper. Seriously. He won't keep one on, he can take off any pair of pants we put over his diaper. He was doing things like taking off his diaper and then peeing on the floor, this kid does not like messy pants! As a result he has insisted on us putting big boy undies on him and has started going pee pee in the potty all by himself! Yay! Two (almost) down and one to go! My grocery budget is rapidly increasing without having to buy diapers for all 3 kids! He's talking quite a bit more and has been sitting through church without throwing his usual "screaming so loudly that everyone can hear him even when we take him out in the hall" tantrums. We're very proud of his progress! He seems to being growing out of his terrible two's a little, much to the relief of the nursery workers at church I'm sure!

Megan is our little mobile girl! She crawls everywhere and can nearly make herself stand on her own. Her favorite thing to do right now is wait until the boys are asleep and then wake up for some one on one daddy time before she goes back to bed. Everytime Brian walks through the door she immediately reaches her arms up and screams until he picks her up (which he ALWAYS does). I don't think I've ever seen a bond as close as theirs! She loves playing with her daddy's beard. This morning I told her to give Ben kisses and sure enough she gave him the most slobbery kiss I've seen on his forhead. She's such a quick learner and loves her brothers so much! So far she's mostly become attatched to Jeffrey and follows about 2 feet behind him at all times. She loves Ben, but he's not so nice when it comes to sharing his trains.

Brian is a week or so into his second rotation for school. His first one was for 6 weeks where he focused on internal medicine. Right now he is doing Family medicine and has about another month of that. I believe his 3rd year rotations go in this order: Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, OB, Psychiatry, Surgery, then Pediatrics next summer. They're all about 6 weeks long. He's doing great and is loving this part of medical school. He also bought a gun for his birthday and has been working to obtain his concealed weapons permit, with any luck he'll have met all of the requirements by this weekend, yay! You'll have to e-mail him if you want details about what type of gun etc... that he got.

As for me, I decided that this semester was not a great time to start school again, I think I will try again in the spring after Megan is a year old. Right now I'm enjoying seeing the kids learn and grow and have become quite the chef/baker! We've been hosting the missionaries now for the last week and a half and I have loved experimenting on them! I'm making things I've never made before and can't believe that I haven't tried making these things before! I think I'm going to start taking pictures of my creations, or at least listing them and the recipes I used. My specialty this last week has been cabbage soup. I followed a simiple Sweet Russian Cabbage Soup recipe for one of the days and just created my on concoction a few days later. We had a lot of cabbage given to us so I've been trying to use it all up before it goes bad. As for baking I've made pumpkin bread, peanut butter cookies and snicker doodles for the first time, as well as two killer banana cream pies. Let's just say the missionaries haven't been complaining!

Well there you have it, that is our update. Hopefully we'll figure out the whole camera situation soon. One last thing, we took a mini vacation a couple of weeks ago to Gatlinburg to see Ripley's Aquarium and it was AMAZING, they had the coolest shark tank and we couldn't hardly drag Ben out of there! Brian took a couple of pictures of it with his blackberry and will hopefully be posting them soon.

Love,

Shelly

Rub-a-dub-dub, three kids in a.....box???

Just another example of how the box is always much more fun than the toy inside.

Ben and his "Mini-Me"

Seriously, these two are identical twins 3 years apart (and with different genders). Brian and I were up late the other night and got to looking through some old photos of when Ben was a baby. Of course, Ben not being one to miss out on ANYTHING came out of his room to join us. We pointed to pictures of him asa baby and asked him who it was, and of course he goes "It's Megan!" Too cute! He can't even tell the difference!

Our kids fall asleep in the strangest places.....

Happy Birthday Daddy!

I think this is the first year in 2 or 3 years that we haven't been traveling across the country on Brian's birthday. We made sure he did all the traveling before the actual day this year. :)
